Mike Kavanaugh's career spans more than four decades of engineering, designing, and manufacturing specialized equipment for demanding applications around the world. Since 1979, his work has centered on solving production problems that conventional equipment couldn't—developing practical, purpose-built systems around the customer's actual process and materials. As a founding member of a world-class specialty construction company, Mike helped develop projects for zoos, aquariums, theme parks, casinos, resorts, and other highly specialized environments worldwide. That work required developing new ways to use materials including GFRC, GFRG, UHPC, urethanes, polyesters, silicones, and AR- and PVA-fiber-reinforced systems—often adapting materials and equipment for applications that had not been attempted before. His engineering experience also extended beyond construction. Mike worked as a Special Effects Technician on 23 major motion pictures, along with music videos and television commercials, where unusual problems, tight deadlines, and one-of-a-kind solutions were simply part of the job. But one material captured his attention from the beginning: Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete (GFRC). After first working with it in 1979, Mike predicted that GFRC would become “the Play-Dough of the concrete industry.” More than 47 years later, that prediction has proven remarkably accurate. Today, that same hands-on engineering philosophy remains at the heart of Gulfstream Manufacturing. From individual pumps and high-shear mixers to complete production systems and custom equipment, the objective is still the same: understand the problem first, then engineer and build the right solution.
